First Baptist Church

Amarillo, Texas

First Baptist Church implemented a master plan to link all campus buildings together with covered loggias and terraces through a very well thought through concept by Charles Lynch. A cohesive lighting design highlights the warm and dramatic facades constructed from 1908 through 2010. On site mockups were critical to the design process to not only prove to LLD our concepts and calculations were correct but to also get the church comfortable with the fees and lighting budgets that were required to pull this wonderful re-birth of the church buildings. Nothing like this has ever been attempted to this scale in Amarillo and it has become a beacon for the downtown area community. Layering of column uplighting, LED grazers, and backlit stained glass highlight the entry concept. Accent fixtures highlight the arches and bells of the tower to reinforce the overall concept. Although a very small part of the project, the existing interior lighting concept glow has to be balanced just right with the newly implemented exterior lighting scheme. All lighting is controlled by the dimming system which also serves aspects of energy management and maintenance. Lighting scene programs for typical evenings, evenings with events, and after hours assist to conserve energy and lamp life. Timeclock and scheduling features coordinate lighting scenes with the church's calendar.
